Day 8

PORT STANLEY, FALKLAND ISLANDS

The Falkland Islands were visited by Charles Darwin in the 19th century and, like the Galapagos, were found to contain examples of flora and fauna not seen elsewhere. These discoveries prompted thoughts in Darwin, which ultimately found shape in his iconoclastic work, ‘Origin of Species.’ Some of these discoveries, like the Warrah, the once common Falkland Islands fox, have now disappeared, but others remain. These include birds such as the Cobbs wren, plants such as the colourful Felton’s flower, Falkland’s false plantain and an inhabitant of the unique geological stone runs, the fascinating snake plant. Common here in the islands, yet approaching extinction throughout the rest of the world, are species such as the striated caracara and the ruddy-headed goose, tame enough to make for some superb photo opportunities.

Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Included Shore Excursion – Bluff Cove Lagoon Penguin Safari

Don’t miss this exciting excursion as we set off over paved roads for a short drive before switching to Land Rover 4×4 for an off road adventure to a privately owned wildlife haven. On arrival at the Bluff Cove Penguin Rookery, rangers will brief us on the area and what you can expect. Stroll through the penguin colony, which features a scenic lagoon and a white, sandy beach that is occasionally patrolled by sea lions. Along the beach you can see over 1,000 pairs of nesting Gentoo Penguins, Magellanic and Jackass penguins and a small breeding colony of King Penguins. Upland geese, ruddy-headed geese, Magellanic oystercatchers, Falkland’s flightless steamer ducks and other birds make their homes close by. Diddle-dee (a local plant) grows in abundance and is favoured by the locals and made into jam for the “cream teas” served at the beachside Sea Cabbage Café. During your visit, pop in for a cup of tea, coffee or hot chocolate or some home baked treats including scones and the Diddle-dee jam. Enjoy the warmth of the Peat Stove while listening to live music. The Bluff Cove museum depicts life in the Falklands and tells the story of the farm, the sugar wreck, the 1982 war between Britain and Argentina, and the fabulous lagoon wildlife. Watch live demonstrations of spinning and felting with local wool used to make the Bluff Cove Tweed. Enjoy free time to take photographs, stroll along the beach, look around the museum and enjoy treats in the café. We return to the minibus by Land Rover 4×4 and head back to Stanley.

Day 9

DAY AT SEA – THE STRAIT OF MAGELLAN

The Strait of Magellan is an oceanic passage which generally connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean, situated in southern Chile and Argentina. The earliest European voyage from the Atlantic to the Pacific was Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, and his route, the Strait of Magellan, between the South American mainland and Tierra del Fuego is named for him. The Strait of Magellan is fully navigable and offers a glimpse into a very unique world in this water body classified as a semi-enclosed periantartic ecosystem.
Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 10

PUNTA ARENAS, CHILE

This picturesque town, set on rolling, wind scoured hills, is considered Chilean big sky country. Our local guide tells us of the tall Aonikenk or Tehuelches aboriginal people who were nomad and terrestrial hunters. It is said that their high stature and pronounced plantar footprint gave origin to the name Patagonia. On departing Punta Arenas this evening, the ship will sail the Cockburn Channel, the Beagle Channel and Glacier Alley. Make sure you are on deck as the scenery is quite dramatic!

Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Included Shore Excursion – Punta Arenas City Tour

Discover the city of Punta Arenas, capital of the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, founded in 1848 and located on the shores of the Strait of Magellan. We will visit its main streets and avenues; the Cerro Mirador from where we will obtain a panoramic view of the city overlooking the Port, the Strait of Magellan, and Tierra del Fuego Island. We will continue our tour towards the Plaza de Armas and Municipal Cemetery before returning to the pier.

Approx. 3.5 hours

Day 11

USHUAIA

Ushuaia is unlike any place you have ever visited. Surrounded on three sides by majestic mountain peaks, the mysterious Beagle Channel closes in on the fourth. Lying just outside of town, the Tierra del Fuego National Park remains a vast land of discovery and unimaginable beauty.

Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Included Shore Excursion – Tierra del Fuego National Park

Our tour starts in Ushuaia with a thirty-minute drive we to the end of a very famous road, the Pan-Americana Highway. At this spot, we are three thousand kilometres from Buenos Aires and eleven thousand from Alaska! Tierra del Fuego National Park is huge at 63,000 hectares and offers glorious mountain chains, rivers, hard wood forests, acid peat bogs and rocky sea coast. The combination of very different landscapes in a relatively small area is quite unique. A paradise for bird watchers, it is the home of Condors, Rayaditos, giant Black Carpenter birds, Southern Parrots, Thrushes, Fishing Martins, Flightless Steamer duck and forest birds. Huge beaver dams cut the small rivers and let the waters rise into lakes which house a large variety of peat bog plants and tender orchids.

Approx. 4 hours

Day 12

DAY AT SEA: CAPE HORN

Cape Horn Island is named after the city of Hoorn in the Netherlands and is the southernmost headland of the Tierra del Fuego archipelago of southern Chile. It is widely considered to be the most southerly point of South America and marks the northern boundary of the Drake Passage; for centuries, it has been regarded as a major milestone by which sailing ships carrying trade goods around the world marked their passage. Cape Horn was noted as the halfway point from England to Australia during the 19th century clipper route. The number of ships rounding Cape Horn from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean dropped greatly when the Panama Canal opened in 1914. Sailing around the Horn is widely regarded as one of the major challenges in yachting, and important yacht races, including Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race or OSTAR continue to sail this route, sometimes as part of a circumnavigation of the globe.
Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 13

DAY AT SEA: CANAL SARMIENTO

Be on deck today to admire the rugged beauty of this scenic Channel. Sandwiched between snow-capped mountains, this Tierra del Fuego waterway is surrounded by the natural parkland of Torres del Paine. While the steep mountain slopes on either side certainly look forbidding and rough, the geologic record shows that millions of years ago, this area was once lush with forests and reptilian creatures. On land, the Petrified Forest attests to this theory, and the prehistoric art (that occurred much later on a comparative timeline) demonstrates that it was once a hospitable place to live. Today, only the heartiest of hikers climb the crags and creaks of mighty Mount Sarmiento. The west side of the Sarmiento Canal is flanked by Madre de Dios Island, with towering limestone peaks that fall precipitously into the channel. The east side is interspersed with islands and eventually meets the Chilean mainland. Stunning Amaila Glacier is a marvelous splash of blue and white in a country that ancient explorers described as ‘where the soil is swampy, cold, and unfit for cultivation, and whose climate is thoroughly cheerless.’ Oh, if they had only looked around to see that penguins, seabirds and mighty whales find it all quite agreeable.
Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 14

DAY AT SEA: CHILEAN FJORDS

Beautiful enough to beguile even Darwin, seasoned explorer and theorist, the Chilean Fjords provide a jaw-dropping range of scenery, glaciers, mountains and islands, punctuated by the occasional town languishing on a remote bay.
Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 15

PUERTO MONTT, CHILE

This charismatic town, in the style of its Bavarian settlers, features homes with steeply pitched roofs and elaborate balconies. Our adventure takes us to Petrohue Waterfalls and the ‘City of Roses,’ Puerto Varas.

Overnight: MS Oosterdam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Included Shore Excursion – Puerto Montt, Puerto Varas & Petrohue

Passing through the centre of the city with its typical square and the cathedral known as the region’s oldest building, we stop at an observation point for a beautiful view of the city, Tenglo Island and the Tenglo Channel. Leaving Puerto Montt, we drive along the edge of the shores of Lago Llanquihue, Chile’s second largest lake head towards Puerto Varas, the City of Roses. Reflections of the eternally snow-covered volcanoes Osorno and Calbuco are mirrored in the clear waters of the lake.

The costanera (coastal road) leads to Puerto Varas’ main square with its gardens and historical monument. Travel north to Petrohue Waterfalls and the famous vacation retreat area. The impressive coned peak of the Osorno volcano rises out of the landscape to greet you. Enjoy the bewildering volcanic rock waterfall before returning to Puerto Montt.
