Day 3

Portland, Maine

Portland has grown from a small colonial seaport to Maine’s largest metropolitan area – and one of the hippest towns on the East Coast – over the past 400 years. In the last few decades, urban renewal projects breathed new life into the historic waterfront and downtown areas, where trendy restaurants and galleries sit side by side with handsome heritage landmarks. Despite this city’s cultural and culinary flair, it’s still a thriving fishing port offering a bit of grit alongside its graciousness.

Included Shore Excursion – Peaks Island Lobster Bake

Take the ferry (not exclusive to Holland America Line guests) and transfer from Portland to Peaks Island, three miles away. The 20-minute voyage is a scenic introduction to Casco Bay. Step ashore, where a short walk brings you to the Inn on Peaks Island. Here, a delicious lobster bake buffet lunch is served in typically ‘Downeast’ island surroundings.

You will have 30 minutes of free time to explore the waterfront area and indulge in some shopping, photography or people-watching. Notes: Free time may vary slightly based on the ferry schedule.

Approx. 3 hours

Overnight: MS Zaandam

Day 4

Saint John, New Brunswick

Nestled on the powerful Bay of Fundy, Saint John is a beautiful, historic, and vibrantly urban city—surrounded by breathtaking and rejuvenating nature experiences. You can have it all. Whether you live in or visit Canada’s first incorporated city, you’re sure to be caught up in its gorgeous historic architecture, eclectic shops and restaurants, and rich arts and culture experiences. You’ll also be swept away by its natural attractions. The tides of the Bay of Fundy, the nature trails of Rockwood Park, and the relaxing pockets of historic urban parks all invite you to breathe deeply and enjoy a pause from the city’s energy.

Included Shore Excursion – Saint John, St. Martin & the Bay of Fundy

Experience stunning coastal scenery and photograph some charming covered bridges. See the site of Moosehead Brewery — the oldest independent brewery in Canada — and hear about Saint John’s rich military history as your tour takes you past key sites, such as the Carleton Martello Tower and Fort Howe. Take in the Victorian architecture of the Historic District, including stately homes and quaint historic churches. Visit the famous Reversing Falls Rapids, where the highest tides in the world push against the Saint John River, causing it to reverse twice daily. Explore St Martins, a traditional fishing village on the shores of the Bay of Fundy and stroll along a rugged Bay of Fundy beach to see the sea caves in St Martins. Back in town, don’t miss the vibrant Saint John City Market — a chance to chat with the local vendors and purchase some local specialities. Overlooking the beautiful Bay of Fundy, travel back in time to the 1600’s when you visit Place Fort La Tour and experience life at that time, complete with Palisade, Bastion, and Blacksmith Forge, all nestled amongst replica fort buildings.

Day 5

Halifax & Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Halifax was established by the British to counterbalance the French presence in Québec and Acadia, which at the time included present day New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton Island and the Gaspé Peninsula. For most of its early history, Halifax was the primary North Atlantic base for the Royal Navy. It prospered during times of conflict and languished during times of peace. Our time ashore today takes you to some of the most interesting and famous places in this idyllic city and province.

Included Shore Excursion – Peggy’s Cove & Lunenburg

Likely one of the prettiest and best-known places in Nova Scotia, Peggy’s Cove has retained her glory and picturesque vistas for many generations. A scenic drive takes us to Lunenburg, home of our famous Canadian Schooners, Bluenose and Bluenose II. This gorgeous town has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site to ensure protection for much of Lunenburg’s unique architecture and civic design, as it is the best example of a planned British colonial settlement in North America. The original inhabitants of Lunenburg (mostly Germans from the southern Rhineland, Swiss and French Protestants from Montbeliard) came during the same wave of immigration that produced the Pennsylvania Dutch. They were “Foreign Protestants” encouraged by the British to settle in the area. Many of the original families and descendants still inhabit and influence the development of the town today.          Approx. 7 hours

Day 7

Corner Brook, Newfoundland

Newfoundland’s fourth-largest city, Corner Brook is the hub of the island’s west coast. Hills fringe three sides of the city, which has dramatic views of the harbor and the Bay of Islands. The town is also home to a large paper mill and a branch of Memorial University. Captain James Cook, the British explorer, charted the coast in the 1760s, and a memorial to him overlooks the bay.

Included Shore Excursion – Gros Morne National Park

Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is where you will learn about the collision of the continents that formed this land. Its dramatic geology means that it contains rock that is more than a billion years old. Re-live the past through archives dedicated to Eskimos, Maritime Archaic Natives, Beothucks and early Europeans. See how these peoples lived and survived in this beautiful but harsh environment. Your tour will take you to the National Park Visitor Center, Lobster Cove Head Lighthouse, Norris Point Lookout and the communities of Norris Point and Rocky Harbour. A light lunch of soup and sandwiches will be served at Rocky Harbour.      Approx. 7 hours

Day 9

Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island may be Canada’s smallest province, but it’s big on history and attractions. In 1864, one of the most important events in Canadian history took place in Province House – the famous Charlottetown Conference which resulted in the creation of the Canadian confederacy.

Included Shore Excursion – Anne, Lobster & Scenic Drive

Welcome to Charlottetown, birthplace of the Canadian nation. Prince Edward Island is a place noted for its friendly people, warm hospitality, rolling farmlands, stunning seascapes, tiny villages and bustling harbours, all of which you will see along the scenic Blue Heron Drive. P.E.I.’s North Shore is most famous for the red cliffs of P.E.I. National Park. Here, you will also find Cavendish Beach, the Anne of Green Gables Homestead and delicious lobster. Enjoy lunch at the Prince Edward Island Preserve Company, an island landmark known for its great food.  The owners, Bruce and Shirley MacNaughton, have renovated a 1913 butter factory into wonderful showcase of island products including their own world-famous preserves. It is located in one of Canada’s prettiest villages brimming with island charm and hospitality along with a spectacular view.

Your lobster lunch (alternatives are available) will include fresh cooked lobster with traditional island potato salad and coleslaw. Choose island mussels or homemade soup as an appetizer, and for dessert, dive into a luscious slice of divine raspberry pie.   Approx. 4.5 hours

Overnight: MS Zaandam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 10

Cruising the Gulf of St. Lawrence

A lighthouse on little St. Paul’s Island is a stark reminder of days gone by as you sail past this infamous old shipwreck site, known as the graveyard of the gulf, on your way through the Cabot Strait and into the Gulf of St. Lawrence. So huge is the gulf that half of Canada’s 10 provinces have a coastal connection to it. Perhaps that’s not surprising, considering that it’s the world’s largest estuary and fed all the way from the Great Lakes 1,200 kilometers away.

Overnight: MS Zaandam
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 11

Saguenay

The quaint waterfront town of Saguenay is situated in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean—a stunning region named after two standout geographical features that were formed by glaciers: Lake (or Lac) Saint-Jean and the Saguenay River, which winds through one of the longest fjords in the world. These natural glories allow visitors to Saguenay access to a number of seasonal outdoor activities, from kayaking on Lac Saint-Jean and hiking and biking in Saguenay Fjord National Park to winter sports galore.

Included Shore Excursion – Saguenay & the Heritage Route

At the tip of a majestic fjord, where the waters of the Saguenay and the St Lawrence Rivers meet, you will find the charming village of Saguenay. Visit the district of Chicoutimi — known for its decidedly French atmosphere and a touch of the Old World, and learn about the area’s culture and history. As you begin your sightseeing tour, you’ll discover the importance of Saguenay Fjord, deeply chiseled into the Laurentian Mountains and once a natural trading route for the First Nations people. Drive along the main street, Rue Racine, and past the Old Port. Stop for photos at the Cultural Quarter and the Little White House that miraculously survived the flood of 1996, and at the Pulp Mill of Chicoutimi. Next you will drive through Arvida — the ‘Washington of the North’. This is perfect example of a 20th-century company town — in 1926, 270 houses were built here in 135 days — each one completely different from the others. See the world’s first aluminum bridge, built to display the strength and diversity of aluminum, and visit the Sir William Price Museum housed in a wonderful Anglican chapel built in 1912.

The museum is dedicated to the pulp and paper dynasty of four generations of the Price family. Drive by the homes of both management and workers of the company town of Old Kenogami. Before returning to the ship, you will see the area of Jonquiere, also built as a company town.

Approx. 3½ hours

Overnight: MS Zaandam

Day 12

Québec City

In 1608, Samuel de Champlain founded a settlement at Kébec, an Algonquin word meaning ‘place where the river narrows.’ In doing so, he established what would become the first permanent French settlement in North America and one of the world’s most enchanting cities with a tree lined “Champs Elysées,” buttery croissants, the lilt of French and a grand château on the river. Is this Canada, or is it France? It is both. A bastion of French culture in North America where impassioned Québécois hold dear their history, language and culture. Québec is also the largest walled city in North America.

Included Shore Excursion – Best of Québec & Countryside

Learn the fascinating history of Québec as you are whisked back in time to relive the city’s 400-year legacy followed by a journey along the St. Lawrence River to one of the most picturesque areas of the Province of Québec known as the Beaupre Coast. First, visit the Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre Shrine where popular belief says that Ste. Anne saved numerous shipwreck victims off Cap Tourmente. Head over to the Island of Orléans for a scenic drive through pastoral landscapes, and an exquisite lunch in a beautiful setting. Visit an authentic cabane à sucre (sugar shack) to see how maple products are made and taste sweet maple taffy. As you make your way back to Québec City, stop at Montmorency Falls. Cascading down a 272-foot cliff, the falls are one and a half times as high as Niagara Falls. See the powerful forces of nature as the water of the Montmorency River roars down the cliff to eventually meet with the St. Lawrence River. Inside the fortress walls of Old Québec, discover the strength and beauty of the cradle of the French culture in North America. This city is a remarkable mélange of Amerindian, French and British heritage, evident in its narrow cobblestone streets, stone gates and ramparts.

Stop at Dufferin Terrace and the Château Frontenac Hotel, Québec’s most famous landmark with panoramic views over the Old City, the Lower Town, the St. Lawrence River and the surrounding countryside.

Approx. 7½ hours

Day 13

Montreal, Quebec

We disembark the ship and set off on a half day tour of Montreal to discover the many facets of the city. Enjoy a journey through time in Old Montréal, located between the St. Lawrence Seaway and the downtown skyscrapers. Founded in 1642, this old town is one of the most popular attractions for visitors and locals alike. It’s also the home of the Notre-Dame-Basilica, widely recognized as one of the most impressive landmarks in the world. The original stained-glass windows here paint a story of Montréal’s religious history. There’s also Olympic Stadium, created for the Summer Olympic Games in 1976. This architectural masterpiece features the tallest inclined tower in the world at 539 feet (165 meters). Mount Royal Park offers an impressive view of the city from its lookout location and St. Joseph’s Oratory is the largest Italian Renaissance-style basilica in Canada. Other points of interest include Chinatown, Old Port, Bonsecours Market Building, Place Jacques Cartier, City Hall, Place Ville-Marie, and much more. Following lunch, the rest of your day is at your leisure to continue exploring.  Join your fellow travellers for a farewell dinner at the hotel.
